Trusting God

“Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him…”

– Psalm 37:3-7

Do you find it difficult to trust God sometimes? I do! Do you often want to take matters into your own hands because God doesn’t seem to be responding to your prayer requests? I do! But according to the Psalmist, we should not take matters into our own hands. According to the Psalmist, we should wait on God. But oh, how hard it is to wait!

I have something that I have been asking God to do for years, and He seems to be silent. Often I cry out to God: “How long O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? Look on me and answer me, O Lord my God” (Psalm 13:1-3). Have you ever cried out to God like this? I have and am!

In Psalm 37, God gives us the remedy for long-suffering. The remedy is found in four commands: trust, delight, commit and be still. If you want to see God’s blessings in your life and if you want God to give you the desires of your heart, then do the following: Trust Him. Delight yourself in Him. Commit each day to Him. And, be still before Him. How do we obey these four commands? We begin by spending time alone with God in His Word daily. For me, that means that the first thing I do when I get to my office early each morning is open up His Word and read it. Then I get on my knees and pray. And then, I ask Him to guide me throughout the day. When I come to the end of the day, and before I close my eyes, I pray, thanking Him for seeing me through that day, and then asking Him for strength for the coming day ahead.

When you are still before God, you will hear from Him. God will teach you His ways. He will comfort you with His words. He will guide you with His light. He will display your righteousness before others so that they will be drawn into the light. He will give you the desires of your heart.

Are you fully committed to the Lord? Or, does the world have you in its grip? Remember, this world in its present form is passing away. Trust God with your life knowing that this world will soon be past and only what’s done for Christ will last. Commit your ways to God and watch for Him to give you the desires of your heart. Amen!
